On September 21, 1996, in the middle of the night, President Clinton signed House Bill 3396, entitled the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). DOMA allows states to disregard same-sex marriages formed in other states. It also defines marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman for the purpose of granting couples federal benefits, such as social security, the Family Medical Leave Act, and any one of more than 1100 rights that vest upon marriage.
The U.S. Constitution guarantees that once one state allows a couple to marry, that marriage must be recognized by all of the other states. The Defense of Marriage Act ignores this Constitutional doctrine and blatantly discriminates against the Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender (LGBT) community. Consequently, the Defense of Marriage Act presents a frightening violation of the civil rights of all Americans.
The Defense of Marriage Act must be overturned.

Left Out In America: Legislating Life, Love and LGBT is a short documentary that reveals how the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) infringes on the constitutional rights of a large group of Americans. Through this film, we aim to raise awareness of this civil rights issue and mobilize people to take action to repeal DOMA. After all, when Congress takes away the rights of some Americans, it jeopardizes the rights of all Americans.
